What You Need to Know About Tanning Now – Tanning Salons Tips

I’ll give you the most important note on how to use a tanning bed. 1.) Don’t! I remember being a teenager and hearing the battle of the statistics and it didn’t make a bit of difference to me at that time. I chose the pro-tanning statistics, because I wanted to tan. So I’m a firm believer that anyone who wants to tan will, no matter what the facts are. Also, know this…I am not anti-tan or tanning bed. I’m pro using them wisely by considering how often to tan and for how long you should stay in them. I go myself once a month during the long winter months in the frozen mid-west.

However, here are some of the facts. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation’s website, “Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than one million skin cancers are diagnosed annually. Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime. Also, on it’s website, the National Cancer Institute states, “Women who employ tanning beds more than once a month are 55 percent more likely to develop malignant melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer.” Those are facts that simply can’t be ignored.

Whatever the effects are that you are looking to carry out from a tanning bed, you can get them from somewhere else. High quality powder bronzers are available for your face everywhere; not to mention the fact that the pale look is always in. (See vintage pin-up model Dita Von Teese, any Tim Burton movie and any number of A-list stars who choose to stay pale all year-round. It’s a bold look that makes a statement; don’t be timorous to go with it. It can even be more appealing than that over-tanned look.)

If you simply must tan, consider these practices. If you live in a climate where it gets cold in the winter, the mid-west or north for example, consider tanning once a month during these months. I sympathize with the fact that it does feel relaxing to be that warm in such harsh weather. Also, research light therapy, the benefits of tanning (vitamin K for mood improvement in people with Seasonal Affective Disorder, for example) can now be achieved in tanning beds with UV filters installed in them. You can also prefer vitamin K supplements or eat food rich in vitamin K for similar mood boosters.

If you need to relax, why not gain a massage? It offers similar benefits provided by tanning, but is actually far more therapeutic and needs to be done less often for the same result. While you’re researching salons that massage, consider trying a spray tan. We’ve all heard the same old orange-tinted tanning jokes. But this orange color happens when a tanning solution is misapplied or applied too heavily or too often. You can also secure self tanning lotions available that create a gradual change in pigment, from inexpensive brands such as “Jergens”.

Remember, the sun itself is not evil. In fact, getting outside every day in the fresh air and getting natural sun exposure is healthy for you. Just gain sure to go out and play during the times when the sun is not the strongest, saving you from some of the harsher UV rays. According to the website for the National Program for Playground Safety, “As the sun moves higher in the sky, the sun’s rays become more intense and damaging to the skin and eyes. This is because the ultraviolet (UV) light travels a shorter, more direct distance to reach the Earth. The peak sun intensity hours, when UV light is strongest, are between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. standard time or 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. daylight savings time.” That’s right, it’s not just about our adult vanity, these regulations are true across the board, especially for children.

Last but not least, sunscreen should become an everyday habit. Thankfully, many lotions now include SPF, as well as facial moisturizers, lip balm, and even makeup. You especially need to glance for sunglasses that block UV rays. Do invest in these products. They can help prevent premature aging as well as skin cancer, and you win the added bonus of that slight scent of sunscreen which can even have a subliminally pleasant affect of reminding you of vacation time, thus improving your mood.

There are a plethora of bonuses to taking care of your skin, the best one being that you are preserving your acquire life for yourself and the ones who adore you. If you can resist the hasten to tan in a tanning bed, eventually it will go away. You can even adopt other practices of self-care that can fill the void, such as getting your nails done or scheduling micro-trims at the salon. In the past, I’ve gotten into the habit of tanning just as a little self-indulgence. But there are better ways to do this that won’t ultimately cost you your health…or your life.

Spring has arrived. Many of the states throughout the country have experienced temperatures more reminiscent of May than March. Sunny California is not particular sunny during the months of January, February and March; in fact those are the wettest months of the year. This year however, the arrival of spring has brought warmer weather and all this warm weather can mean only one thing. It’s bathing suit season.

Sun worshipers are already laying out their towels and beach bunnies have begun to infiltrate the coastlines. In order to demonstrate off that great new swim suit, a girl’s got to have a decent tan, right? Factual! The only problem with that theory is the risk of skin cancer. Since no one wants to view pale and ghostly in their beach wear I’m offering you a ton of tips on the alternative, safe way to glow golden and bronzed without all those sun rays.

Self tanning has been around for a long, long time. Self tanning is the process of applying cream, lotion, or spray to the skin so that the results are a semi-permanent change in the color of the skin, thus the tan. Normally a self tan, or sad tan other wise known as the fake bake or fake tan, lasts between 2 to 10 days depending on the type of product and method used. During the 1920’s Dihydroxyacetone, a chemical found in self tanning products, was found to turn the skin brown but the first sunless suntan cream wasn’t developed until the sixties by Coppertone. By the time the eighties rolled around people were slathering the lotions and creams on their bodies only to find that they had turned orange rather than brown.

I remember my first experience with a sunless tanning lotion. Self tanners were easy to spot in those days thanks to that abominable Halloween pumpkin orange glow we emitted. Just recently several laws have been passed to limit the use of UV tanning beds and so once again Americans have fallen back on the old favorite, suntan creams. Times have changed and technology has advanced so that we no longer have the orange dilemma. There are more sunless tanning brands out there than you can shake a stick at and the techniques are as varied as the products themselves. There are lotions, creams, sprays; pills, air brushing and accelerators just to mention a few. Whether you are spraying or smearing there are a few things you should know. Here are some great tips to getting the best canned tan on the beach.

1. Take a shower first. You can’t expect to get a good even tan if your skin is coated in dead cells, dust and grime, all of which we accumulate on a daily basis.

2. Prior to applying any sunless tanning product to your skin, refrain from shaving. The more sensitive your skin, the worst your results will be if you shave. Remember you are applying a chemical to your skin.

3. Exfoliate your skin while you shower. You don’t want to scrub away your skin but you will need to pay special attention to the elbows, knees, ankles, feet and neck areas. Steer distinct of nylon or loofah scrubbers though as they are sure to cause streaking.

4. Deodorant and antiperspirants cause self tanning products to skedaddle. The best thing to do is make sure you have the air conditioner running so that the room stays cool or rinse off in a cool shower before applying.

5. Wear gloves during the application. There really is no other way to avoid having orange palms. If you chose not to wear gloves makes sure you wash your hands every few minutes and scrub vigorously with a nail brush to help rid of the stain.

6. There are a couple of neat tricks offered at sunless.com. One is to use a sponge paintbrush to apply the product. These are nifty itsy-bitsy items usually found in any craft store or the paint department of Wal-mart. Simply spray the solution onto the sponge and rub on your body to eliminate streaks and other application mistakes. The other tip is to exercise a baby wipe. Rinse a couple out in the sink and hang to dry. When they are completely dry spray with self tanning lotion or foam and wipe your body with it. Continue to spray the wipe as needed when it begins to dry out again.

7. Never apply any sunless tanning product the same day as an planned event or evening out. You never know what kind of disasters may arise from your self tanning adventure and you don’t want to be caught in public with unnatural skin color.

8. The best time to try self tanning is during the late winter when you can hide any mistakes with lots of clothing. Be sure to try different brands to find the one that suits you best and when you do your test session avoid covering the facial place until you know exactly what the outcome will look like.

9. Unless you’re a contortionist applying the tanners to your back is quite difficult. One easy method is to pick a foam paint roller with a long handle on it. Do not try to substitute the foam for another material as foam is the only kind that works with this method. Apply the product to the roller and roll up and down your back. If you’re too leery of attempting that simply employ the wait on of a friend or spouse.

10. The only way to hold your tan is to reapply the tanning solution every other day and moisturize on a daily basis. Your skin may dry out after repeated tannings so be sure to let the tan wear off completely after the third or fourth application.

If after all that, once you’ve scrubbed and moisturized you find that your tan has turned out very bad and you just want to pick up rid of it you smooth have way of getting it off. It does take work and could possibly make your skin sore, but there is a way.

The most natural way to acquire it is to just let time pass. It will eventually disappear and disappear somewhere around 10 days later. During these times I deem its best if you try to stay at home and avoid human contact because yes, people will recognize. It’s your choice though, if you’d rather just wait it out you can but don’t expect it to go unnoticed.

The other way to take the sunless tanner is pretty simple. When it comes to the face and neck areas baking soda does the trick. First get your face wet and then massage baking soda into the skin in microscopic circles. Sometimes makeup remover will even remove a bad fake tan from your face. For the rest of your body dip a wash cloth in hydrogen peroxide and scrub away the tan. Do a test patch first to determine whether or not your skin will be irritated by it. You can also coat your body in baby oil and then take a shower using baking soda once again to scrub and exfoliate the tan away.

If after you gave all that a try and you find yourself stuck in the base shade of orange, look up it could be worst, you could be purple. If the tan refuses to come off then you might as well just accept it because there’s nothing in the world except for time that’s going to get rid of it. Self tanning products like Coppertone, Banana Boat, Clinique and others are merely a stain. They do not dye your flesh or provide you with permanent results. There’s always a risk eager and you never know what the results will be until you give it a try. Don’t judge the product by what you see on someone else’s skin, everyone’s self tanning adventure is different.

Review of L’Oreal Sublime Bronze Tinted Self-Tanning Lotion – Best Self Tanning Lotion

In a previous article I declared that L’Oreal’s Sublime Glow sunless tanning lotion was my celebrated among the cheap drug-store varieties, but since then I have discovered a brand new favorite. While shopping in CVS I saw L’Oreal’s Sublime Bronze Tinted Self-Tanning Lotion and decided to give it a try. Where Sublime Glow is a gradual self-tanning lotion, Sublime Bronze packs a dinky more punch and gives the skin a tanned appearance in less time. In the past I have steered away from stronger sunless tanning products because I always end up with dark splotches around my ankles, knees, and elbows. There are a few reasons for those self-tanning mishaps: lack of thorough exfoliation, carelessness, and because my previous experiences have been with white lotions that absorb instantly into the skin, making it difficult to stammer where they have been applied. What I love about L’Oreal’s Sublime Bronze Tinted Self-Tanner (in Medium) is that when you apply the product, it gives the skin a subtle bronze tint, making it clear where the lotion has been applied, so the chances of missing a spot here or there are lowered. The product, like Sublime Glow, contains a handsome amount of shimmer, but the glitter wasn’t overwhelming. L’Oreal claims that the product contains Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) and Vitamin E, resulting in a streak-free, fast-drying tan which begins to appear in as limited as an hour. It is illustrious that AHA could increase skin sensitivity to the sun, so that is something to retain in mind. (Of course, no matter what you should always protect your skin with sunscreen or sun block!)

L’Oreal did not disappoint this sunless tanner with Sublime Bronze Tinted Self-Tanning Lotion. The product was quickly absorbed into my skin and didn’t rub off on clothes or sheets and it also left my skin feeling soft and serene. The tan wasn’t orange, it was very natural-looking, and after two days of use I had developed the results I wanted. The only way this product could be improved would be if L’Oreal could find the miracle cure for the notorious “fake tan smell” that all sunless tanners have due to dihydroxyacetone (DHA). The smell wasn’t bad, though, and not nearly as overpowering as the odor I’ve noticed with other dark tanning products. For around $10, this product is definitely worth checking out if you’re in the market for a new black tanner this summer.

Best Self-Tanning Products for Winter Months – Spray Tanning Lotion

If you are like me, laying in a tanning bed for 20 minutes, getting burnt, then going outside into the harsh winter weather is about as appealing as having a cold! And the cost! I would much rather have the money it costs to; get a base tan, then maintain that tan. No one has to go through winter looking like Casper though, there are many sunless tanner products out there to choose from! Some people are very weary of sunless tanners with some causing orange tints or zebra stripes if not applied properly. But I have found, by trial and error, several sunless tanning products that are cheap, and the results are great! Here are some of my favorites:

Neutrogena: Sunless Tanner Micro Mist

This spray runs around 10.00$ depending on where you assume it, and it is a rounded spray can. It is very easy to apply, just spray (it has a continuous spray so you don’t get big bursts that wear out) all over your body. Spray a little on your fingers to apply to the face though!! The key is to keep the spray nozzle at a distance of about 6-8 inches from the body and keep that constant, so that you don’t have darker spots than others. This usually only happens if you get the nozzle really close. I use the deep formula for this, its about 3 shades darker than your staring skin tone, and leaves you with the perfect bronze color, rather than orange. This spray does dry fast, and you can rub it in good after you spray to ensure even tone, but its not required. This particular spray has a very slight smell after drying, but its not strong, and not a horrible smell at all.

Neutrogena Sunless Tanning Foam

This also gave me about the same color, it is a couple of collars cheaper though. If you get the citrus smelling foam, it has a funky smell at first, but that fades to no smell at all after a few minutes. Its easy to spread, and is very light, so it dries fast. You can get this in the deep formula or regular as well. Like lotions you want to use sparingly around knees and elbows where there is dryer skin.

Loreal Sublime Bronze Tinted Self Tanner

This is my celebrated sunless tanner when it comes to deep rich color quickly. The lotion is more like a gel that is dark brown, and it has tiny gold flecks of shimmer in it, so you get a full body shimmer after putting this tanner on. It doesn’t have a strong smell at first, but it does become noticeable after a few hours, not terrible, but noticeable. Its a little more easy to goof with this lotion, it doesn’t dry as fast, so putting it on before bed is not the best idea, if you sleep with your side, with your knees together, you may notice darker spots in the morning! Overall, as long as this is do on in the evening an or so before bed, you should be radiant. Sublime is around 9 dollars.

Banana Boat Sunless Tanning Summer Color

This has the best smell of a tanning lotion that I have come across. It is a brown tinted gel, but doesn’t tint your skin, and its easy to apply and not streak. The gel is also a great moisturizer and leaves my skin feeling incredible, which also helps that tan last longer, especially with the winter cold drying skin out! After a few hours the superior smell wore off, but it doesn’t have an “after smell” either really, not that I noticed anyway. This also comes in light/medium as well as deep shades. This tanner runs about 8 or 9 dollars

Victoria’s Secret Bare Bronzer

This is my least well-liked of the ones that I have tried, it smelled very funky, but was easy to apply. It took a while to dry, and had a very strong odor after a couple of hours. The color wasn’t very even either, as if the lotion was mixed well. I am not sure the cost of this, because mine was a gift from a friend, but I imaging its more expensive than the others that I listed.

To get a flawless application of self tanner, you need to make sure that your skin is clean and exfoliated! Shaving your legs is adequate, but you should also expend a sugar scrub or other scrub for the rest of your body, face too!! Construct sure you have time so you don’t rush and make a mess of yourself, i.e. streaks galore!!! Preserve a constant amount on your skin, and spread or spray evenly. With a small bit of attention anyone can have a perfect bronze glow all winter long.

Thankfully, a more affordable option exists which doesn’t take up any precious space within your home. A portable sun lamp is the perfect solution. You can use it in your home, at your office, or take it on the road with you to retain that tan even during a vacation in the snow. A quick tanning session will never be more than steps away.

Portable sun lamps can be quite inexpensive. Basic models are comparable in price to the cost of only a few hours at a tanning salon. More sophisticated models, however, can cost up to several hundred dollars. Several factors go into differentiating between basic and high end models. The first relates to size, weight, and style. The more compact and stylish ones tend to be slightly more expensive.

However, the main factor in determining quality is the ability to exclude UV-B rays. UV-A rays cause a nice tan. UV-B rays cause a nasty sunburn. The more expensive models of sun lamps are able to filter out UV-B rays reducing the chance of burning. To many, this extra expense is well worth that advantage.

Whichever model selected it should be recognized that tanning through exposure to any ultraviolet (UV) light has associated health risks. Many health experts are concerned that excessive use of tanning beds or lamps can add to skin health risks. Each person has different history and skin characteristics and should carefully consider all available information before deciding which type tanning is best for them.

How to Apply Self-tanner – Best Self Tanner

I used to be an avid tanner. I went to tanning beds several times a week to regain that deep golden bronze gold that many people crave today. However, after doing this for a few years, I discovered a mole on my leg that had not previously been there. That was enough to release me of my tanning addiction. After all the horror stories I read about people who have skin cancer as a result of excessive tanning, I decided it was time for me to stop. That’s when I discovered and being experimenting with self-tanners.

There are many different types of self-tanners – some most definitely work better than others, and some smell a lot better than others too. I think it really depends from person to person, but a few of my person favorites are Bath ad Body Works Strike Gold – Self Tanning Lotion With Bronzer, Nature’s Gate Organics Upper Tanagement Tanning Creme (available from Drugstore.com), and Fusion Beauty Perfect Glow (available from Sepora.com). These are tanners that have worked effectively for me, but I think it takes some experimenting to find one that suits your particular skin tone body chemistry. Once you’ve selected a self-tanning lotion, you’re all set to commence!

1.) Exfoliate: This is a step that is absolutely essential to have a beautiful fake tan. Our skin has so many uninteresting cells on the surface that can cause your tan to be blotchy and streaky if not removed. The most effective way to remove them is when you’re in the shower. While many people think it necessary to purchase an expensive exfollient, you can impartial as easily use ingredients that you most likely already have in your kitchen. My favorite thing to utilize to exfoliate is regular sugar! When I get in the shower and suds up, I grab a handful of sugar and gently massage it into my skin. You have to be careful to not massage it in to the point that it could cause great irritation to your skin. Another great exfollient is found in baking soda. I spend that too the same procedure I use sugar to get rid of those dead skin cells! Another option is to exhaust regular table salt in the same manner. After you exfolliate, you’re now ready to self-tan!

2.) Apply: Now that you’ve exfolliated, it’s time to apply your self-tanner. Applying it can get tricky sometimes, particularly when it comes to your hands. To start with, it’s useful to apply lotion in a thick layer to areas that are dry. I put lotion on my elbows, my knees, my heels, toes, and on the back of my heel where your leg and foot meet. I then use any kind of plastic gloves on my hands, to avoid orange palms. The tighter the gloves are, the better, so the self-tanner doesn’t get inside the glove while you’re applying it. I first apply the lotion my legs and feet, being careful to not do too much on my feet, and use the regular lotion that had already been applied to kind of mix together on my feet. I then do my chest area, face and as much of my back as I want done. After that, I apply it to my arms. Lastly, carefully remove the gloves and put a small dab of lotion on the back of your hand. Rub the backs of your hands together to make certain they too gather self-tanner on them. Another place to be careful of here is your fingers. I also like to apply regular lotion there too, so that the little creases where my knuckles are don’t get too much self-tanner in them. After applying the self-tanner everywhere, it’s important to let it completely dry. In the summer, I go in my bedroom where I have an air conditioner and fan to speed the process up a bit.

3.) Maintain: To fabricate your self-tan last as long as possible, the day after you self-tan, apply some sort of deep moisturizing creme all over the areas that have self-tanner on them. This helps your tan last longer, so you don’t have to do that long process every day!

The Mystic Tan – How Long Does Mystic Tan Last

What is a Mystic Tan?
The Mystic Tan is a spray-on tan that many tanning salons offer as an alternative to traditional ultraviolet (UV) beds. Instead of lying down in a bed, tanners stand in a booth and tanning chemicals are sprayed onto their bodies.

The Mystic Tan was created in response to evidence that UV tanning increases the risk of skin cancer. Additionally, the Mystic Tan requires only one session, as opposed to the 5-10 required for traditional UV tanning.

How Long Does The Tan Last?
The Mystic Tan lasts for approximately two weeks. I decided to get a Mystic Tan because I wanted to be tan for a particular event, so tan didn’t necessarily need to last long. The Mystic Tan is ideal for people who don’t have the time to go to a tanning both several times a week, but want to be tan for a particular occasion, such as a wedding, party, or summer outing. Another benefit of the Mystic Tan is that one session lasts less than a minute, as opposed to 5-20 for UV tanning.

How Much Does It Cost?
The Mystic Tan costs approximately $15-$25 per session, depending on the salon and the packages that they offer. The Mystic Tan is more expensive than traditional tanning because fewer sessions are required to achieve a tan.

What To Expect
When you go for your Mystic Tan, you will retract off all of your clothing and enter a large booth– similar to a stall shower. You’ll cover your hair with a shower cap to prevent the chemicals from touching your hair. The tanning salon staff should tell you how to work the machine and should retort any questions you may have. You have the option of using bronzer, which will make the tan appear immediately. If you do not utilize bronzer, you will still collect a tan.

When you are ready, you press a button to start the machine. You then close your eyes and your mouth (holding your breath will help you avoid inhaling the fumes) and the spray starts a few seconds after you press the button.

If it’s your first time, the spray will startle you. It certainly startled me and gave me an incredible urge to urinate. Be prepared for this sensation.

Stand with your legs slightly apart and your arms away from your body. Stand for about 15 seconds while the front of your body is sprayed, and then turn around for the serve of your body to be sprayed. The session is over in less than a minute. Your entire body will be wet when you get out of the stall. You can pat yourself dry with the towels they offer you, and this will not remove the tan.

The tan will develop within a few hours. You might not notice any immediate difference in your skin color. Do not wear white or light colors on the day that you get the tan, as the chemicals could rub off on your clothing.

Better Or Worse Than UV Tanning?
In my concept, the Mystic Tan is not a pleasant experience. The chemicals smell, it’s extremely uncomfortable, and it’s messy. I don’t think I would get a Mystic Tan again, unless I really wanted to be tan for a particular event without having to invent repeated visits to the tanning bed. Despite the unpleasant experience in the booth, the resulting tan does spy like a real tan– at least it did for me. Depending on your skin coloring, the tan could have orange tones in it. It obviously will not explore as natural as a real tan from the sun or a tan from a UV bed, but it can still look very good. Once again, it all depends on your natural skin coloring.

I do not recommend the Mystic Tan for people who are extremely active in terms of exercise. I go running almost everyday, and sweating caused the tan to rub off. My tan lasted only a week as opposed to two weeks because I was sweating so much through exercise. Additionally, it makes a mess when your sweat has an orange hue.

Given the known risks associated with UV tanning, the Mystic Tan is certainly worth a try.
